The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Essay Example for Free

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Essay The Lottery composed by Shirley Jackson recounts to such a story: There is an antiquated conventional yearly occasion held in a humble community in America. Any individual who wins the â€Å"lottery† will be battered to the point of death for collect. Tessie is the new unluckier this time, who needs to endure this merciless and harsh discipline. Seen profoundly, females’ sub-par position is demonstrated extravagantly in this novel. To start with, the label to females shows that they are in subjection to guys. â€Å"Mrs. Hutchinson came swiftly along the way to the square† (Jackson, 2), â€Å"she said to Mrs.  Delacroix† (Jackson, 2), â€Å"Mrs. Dunbar said regretfully† (Jackson, 3). Here â€Å"Mrs. Delacroix†, â€Å"Mrs. Hutchinson† and â€Å"Mrs. Dunbar† all propose that one female can't be an individual being after her marriage, since she must be a piece of her better half by calling her â€Å"Mrs†. When Tessie comes of late, the villager’s addresses that â€Å"Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson† (Jackson, 2) rather than calling her own name likewise shows that she has become a subordinate item for her significant other. Much the same as Lakoff says in his book Language and Womans Place, â€Å"It is with Mrs, Miss, and Mr. Since a huge piece of the conclusion one regularly shapes about a womans character and social station relies upon her conjugal status as isn't the situation with men† (Lakoff, 73). This marvel is basic everywhere throughout the world. Why don’t guys change their monikers like female do? As a matter of fact, the marriage can't transform anything other than the couple’s new relationship and family way of life. So does a female need to bargain to turn into her husband’s sap? Maybe just when she causes achievement to would she be able to be presented as a free person. The individuals who are happy with their business as usual are probably going to acknowledge the new auxiliary location. Along these lines, females’ subjected nicknames step by step become acclimated. Second, the job of being a housewife unwittingly impacts a female’s equivalent option to satisfy her own achievement. In the novel, â€Å"Mrs. Hutchinson came speedily along the way to the square, her sweater tossed over her shoulders†¦ â€Å"Clean overlooked what day it was,† she said to Mrs. Delacroix†¦She dried her hands on her apron†¦Wouldnt have me leave mdishes in the sink, presently, okay, Joe? † (Jackson, 3) Tessie’s words and the demonstration of â€Å"drying her hands on her apron† recommend the female’s low social situation around then. Clearly, on the off chance that she doesn't â€Å"win the lottery†, her next work is to surge home and serve dinners for the family, since the conventional allotment of family jobs has died down into a built up normal practice: when a lady is hitched, she will surrender her profession and assume the job of a housewife, essence. So by what method can a female have more opportunity to accomplish something progressively unmistakable satisfaction since she has been restricted into such circumstance? It’s no big surprise that females don't share the equivalent situation to plan something increasingly important for some degree. Much the same as Journalist Ruth Franklin captioned her 2010 piece in The New Republic: â€Å"On Shirley Jackson and the test of being both a mother and a writer† (p. 1). She says, â€Å"In the 1950s, the same amount of as now, ladies can possibly compose when the infant rests, or while the kids are at school, or after the dishes are done and the snacks are stuffed and the house is, finally, calm. This kind of coordinations has consistently worked with effectiveness, when the lady comprehends that regardless of how easily the considerations are streaming, they should stop when the school transport comes. It fills in as an acquiescence to frustration† (FRANKLIN, 2010). It’s simple to see that Shirley Jackson’s composing profession is to some degree affected verifiably as a result of her female personality. Being both as a mother and a spouse, she needs to see her careerâ€writing as the optional strategic the family. The humiliating circumstance she confronted is connected with any females around then. In this way, the job of being a housewife unknowingly impacts a female’s equivalent option to satisfy her own achievement. Third, females don’t have the ability to decide. As it is appeared in the novel, guys administer all the issues, â€Å"The lottery was directed by Mr. Summers; The postmaster, Mr. Graves conveyed a three-legged stool; Mr. Martin†¦ approached to hold the crate consistent on the stool† (Jackson, 1). Three most influential men rule the entire town strategically and monetarily. â€Å"There were the rundowns to make up of heads of families, heads of families in each family† (Jackson 2), which proposes the male’s predominant situation in a family. Additionally, â€Å"Dunbar’s spouse subbed him to draw the lottery since he had broken his leg, however Mr. Summers asked whether she had a developed kid to do it† (Jackson, 2) likewise shows that the abnormality of a female to do such an essencial and unequivocal thing. At long last, Tessie’s passing is another proof to show that female isn't just second rate, however a casualty in that grievous social situation. Reserving no options to decide, females fate to be chosen as opposed to choosing. Therefore, the female’s sub-par position has shaped. In a world, females’ mediocre position is demonstrated extravagantly in The Lottery. Their monikers, their family division of the work and their no capacity to settle on choices all presentation the second rate position of females.

Help is available. Here are some helpful tips from various suicide prevention resources. Show Support There are a number of different things you can do to be a supportive and empathetic friend. The key is to avoid being judgmental or dismissive of what your friend is feeling. Speak From the Heart There are no right or wrong things you can say if you are speaking out of love and concern. Just be yourself. Show that you care by talking to them, holding them while they cry, or whatever else is necessary. Research has shown that acknowledging what people are experiencing may help them process their thoughts?? and may reduce their suicidal thoughts.?? Listen A suicidal person usually is carrying around some burden that they feel they just cant handle anymore. Offer to listen as they vent their feelings of despair, anger, and loneliness.?? Sometimes this is enough to lighten the load just enough for them to carry on. Validate Show Openness Be sympathetic, non-judgmental, patient, calm, and accepting. The person will pick up on your attitude and begin to mirror it for themselves. Confirm Suicidal Thoughts Dont be afraid to ask, Are you having thoughts of suicide? Studies show that asking at-risk friends and family members if they are thinking about suicide does not increase suicidal thoughts.?? You are not putting ideas in their head by asking. On the contrary, asking will give you valuable information about how to proceed and help. Get the Facts If the answer is yes, follow up with these three questions:Have you thought about how you would do it?Do you have what you need to carry out your plan?Do you know when you will do it? Fortunately, the majority of people will either say that they have no definite plans or that they dont have the nerve to do it themselves. Keep Them Talking Talking will allow them to reduce the emotional burden they are carrying  and give them time to calm down.?? The longer you keep them talking, the more you can take the edge off their desperation. As their momentum winds down, its harder for them to act on their feelings. Avoid Trying to Solve the Problem Try not to offer quick solutions or belittle the persons feelings. How big they  perceive the problem to be and how much they are hurting over it is what counts. Rational arguments do little good to persuade a person when they are in this state of mind. Instead, offer your empathy and compassion for what they are feeling without making any judgments about whether they should feel that way. When to Seek Help If the person has already started a suicide attempt, call for help immediately. If they are  still conscious, get what information you can about what substances they have ingested, how long ago they took them, how much they took, when they last ate, and their general state of health. Call 911, poison control, or an appropriate emergency contact number in your area and explain the situation. Keep calm and follow any steps they may give you to assist your friend. If you are in a situation, such as an online friendship, where you know very little about the person, encourage them  to call 911 on their own or to call a suicide hotline in their area.  This is your best option, because a local agency, such as 911 or a hotline, may be able to trace the call and get assistance to them. If they refuse to call, do your best to learn whatever personal information you can about the person. Dont hesitate to ask them for their address, phone number, and other information to help dispatch an emergency crew to their home.   Take Care of Yourself Dealing with a suicide threat is very stressful. Be sure to care for yourself as well and seek assistance to process and decompress afterward. Talk to a trusted friend, a therapist, your doctor, a religious leader, or anyone who can offer support about what youve been through and how you feel about it. A Word From Verywell Supporting a friend or loved one experiencing suicidal thoughts can be scary and taxing. Do your best to provide support and get help. If, in spite of your attempts to help, your loved one still attempts or completes suicide, do not blame yourself. If the answers they give you lead you to believe they are in immediate danger, do not hesitate to contact the authorities. Your friend may tell you that you are betraying them or making them angry. You may feel like you will lose their friendship if you take action. Just remember that you may permanently lose their friendship if you dont. When theyre well again, they will thank you. Remind yourself that you did the best you could with the information you had and seek help for yourself such as grief counseling or joining suicide survivor support groups. What I Told My Sister About Studying for the GRE

Starting your vocab review early is KEY As many older siblings can tell you, sometimes your younger siblings would rather go hiking in Antarctica before they ask for the tiniest bit of help or advice. So you can imagine my surprise when I got this message from my youngest sister a few months ago: Sis : i’m finally kinda trying to maybe somewhat get more serious about gre prep Sis : i’ve avoided it for a while Sis : any helpful tips you’ve gained from tutoring? aside from like practicing and getting more familiar? any strategies you've figured out or resources that were surprisingly useful, xyz? Me (replying within 5 seconds): OMG YES I’VE GOT THIS The truth is, there’s no big secret to beating the GRE test. No one is so strong in all sections that they can ace the test without prep, and there’s no one perfect way to study for it that will guarantee you an amazing score. However, just asking those kinds of questions a few months out from your test is already a great start. So, here is exactly what I told my sister (some of it literally word-for-word) about the basics of beginning to prep for the GRE. Starting your vocab review early is KEY The #1 tip I can give about the GRE is to start studying vocab now. By the time most of my students start working with me, they are two months out from the test, and that’s just not enough time. I started studying vocab four months out from my test. These days there are tons of apps you can use to review vocab, but I used and personally recommend physical flash cards. Making flash cards and just carrying them around with you and reviewing a little every day works wonders, and is much better than trying to schedule 1 hour cram periods. Every prep book includes its own set of recommended vocab words, and every tutor will swear by their personal favorites, but there is no one perfect list. Just pick one and start memorizing! The next question is always â€Å"how many should I memorize?† but there isn’t a perfect answer for that either. Everyone starts at a different place. What I can say is that at the end of the day what matters is that you really, really know each word because being kinda sure or going off of context is not going be enough. Finally, just try to keep your eyes and ears open throughout the day for words you don’t recognize. There are plenty of words that I’ve picked up, not from deliberate study, but from hearing it on TV or reading it in a book. Being able to associate a word with a unique scene or memory is a lot more powerful than associating it with just another flash card. Should you take a review course, study alone, or work with a tutor? The next message I got from her was - Sis: i’m thinking about signing up for gre review course (prob online) do you have recs? My response? Something along the lines of â€Å"not really.† The truth is, I haven’t taken any review courses in a classroom setting since my mom made me do one for the SAT, and I couldn’t stand it! It’s a bland, broad general review of all the material, that isn’t capable of accounting for what a student is already comfortable with and what they might need more time to review. At the same time, studying privately out of a prep book is really hard. There’s no one keeping you on task, there’s no one to ask questions, and if the explanation for a concept isn’t clear, you’re out of luck. Now, I’m definitely biased (since this is my job), but my recommendation is always going to be to work with a tutor, whether it’s one short consultation session, or weekly meetings, online or in-person. A tutor can put together a lesson plan that is personalized to both your strengths and weaknesses AND they can also take into account what kind of score you’re aiming for. (And for the record, in case you’re wondering, my little sister may be willing to ask for advice, but she won’t let me tutor her. Ever. There are some older/younger sibling dynamics you never get over!) So that’s the advice I’d give to someone just starting to think about the GRE and how to prep for it. My sister may not have taken her exam yet, but she’s on the path to be prepared and ready when the day comes. Unlike me, when I got her next set of messages later that week†¦ Sis: Um, so how does credit work? And how do I know what credit card to pick? Me: †¦. Me: What do I look like, an adult? Me: Ask Dad. God In The Jewish Tradition Free Essay Example, 2000 words

Mordecai Kaplan, known as the father of Reconstructionism, who pushed this type of identification of God. In his writings, he said that God chose the Jews and determined to help them with their success (Kaplan, 1937). However, Kaplan was not necessarily suggesting that God was a personality. Instead, he was attempting to say that God was something greater than this. He said, God is neither a being nor a philosophical abstraction. God is a creative force in the universe. He was an inspiration to the Jews and the voice that gave with both hands" (1937). Even here, though, God seems to be a greater than normal personality, something physically present but invisible. Other writers have instead suggested that it was not God who contributed to the success of the Jews, but the genius of the people as it was expressed and acted upon by the Jewish people themselves, suggesting that God is not a physical entity or identity, but is instead a sort of overpowering metaphorical idea. Jews have a lways thrived on social responsibility and on a creative energy that is unique to them. To some, God is an individual, like a person, but to many others, God is merely a power that exists high above and has power over all. Throughout the Bible and Jewish history, different individuals have had their arguments and disagreements with and about God. Although God is the almighty power above, not everyone always agrees regarding His messages and intentions which causes problems.

Racial Profiling by Law Enforcement is Unjustifiable Essay

Every individual in the world is different in some way from the person standing next to them. People differ in their culture, ethnicity, race, religion, personality, styles, interest, appearance and more. It is understood that someone may be similar to you not one person will be exactly like you. Growing up it is important for one to understand the differences of other people and show a level of respect for them. As human-beings, people typically learn through experiences. However, these experiences have the tendency to alter the way people perceive other individuals. Choose the Right Major Free Essays

All people go throw many stages from childhood to the end of their life. They build their dreams to become something worth in their lives such as a teacher, doctor or anything else. The most important part of these dreams to become reality is to choose the right major. We will write a custom essay sample on Choose the Right Major or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many people said students should decide what they want to be before they start studying in university. I disagree with them because students at university get help from their friends or teachers to choose their career. In addition to that, many students are changing their decision of major when they start studying at the university. The first reason is, teachers encourage the student to decide the best major according to their personality. Also, their friends help them to choose their major. When students go to university, and start study they begin to communicate with other people [listening]. From those people students take some experiences, and decide what they want to study. For example, students can ask anyone from the student service to give them more information generally about the major and the majors which are available in the university, and also about the major that they want to study. The second reason is, many students change their majors when they go to university. According to the reading A, â€Å"about 80 percent of students who start college switch their major at least one time†. This is because when students start study they got more information about their majors, and they understand what they want to study so they change their majors. For example, in the university students study many subjects to help them to decide which major they want. In conclusion, in this essay I disagree that is necessary for students to know their major before interning the university because students can get some help from their friends who have experiences or from their teachers. Also, many students take time to decide what they want and change their major many times. I think in the future the government will give some courses to the students before they go to the university to help them to decide what they want to study and give them more information about their major. In addition to this, with the mobile applications the users can easily manages their entries and exit options available within their devices, the users can easily provide information about their entries and their purchases (Gao et al., 2016). There must be three modes within this application by which they can easily be tracked by the retailers, such as shopping entered and exit options that will make the retailers informed about their actions within the shopping centres. Customer review option on websites: The concerned websites needs to be manageable with respect to customer responses. In addition to this, there must be innovative response review system that allows the organizational members in viewing the customer perspectives with respect to the customer demands and needs (Sharma Lambert, 2013). The truth on dieting and weight loss Essay Example For Students

The truth on dieting and weight loss Essay The Truth on Dieting and Weight LossAbout one-third of Americans are extremely over-weight, which may be why crash dieting is beginning to plague America. Its estimated that Americans alone spend 80-100 billion dollars on weight loss tactics. People go on these diets to get quick results but are these results hurting them more than helping? The answer is Yes! The only way to safely and effectively lose weight is through old-fashioned exercise and the right diet. You cannot successfully lose weight by simply cutting food from your diet or taking some pills, it is necessary to work for your results. Without depriving your body of necessary nutrients through dieting, you can lose fat and get the body youve always dreamed of, or at least one youre more comfortable with. The quote The effects of the current obsession with dieting can be devastating, said by Mr. Woodworth, a long time exercise and nutrition expert, summarizes the dangers of dieting. The many dangerous methods of losing weight: so called dieting or starvation/fad diets, pills and drugs, over-exercising, surgery, and eating disorders, have taken many casualties. Many people go on diets, a word so commonly misused, to get quick results of weight loss. Perhaps the most common is minor starvation and fad dieting. This method is when people become over concerned with calorie intake. Many deaths have been associated with low calorie diets. By trying to shed pounds simply by cutting all fat from the diet greatly increases the risk of getting cancer, heart disease, and other health problems. That low-fat trap gets people hooked on reduced-fat snacks or possibly not eating at all. So now the body is being deprived of necessary nutrients not available in any pill or liquid form. Yes cutting fat and cholesterol reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes, but nutrient poor diets have an even larger risk of getting those diseases along with many others. Of course a large percent of dieters will lose weight but they will feel depressed afterward and gain back even more than before they started the diet. The reason why is because they are losing healthy weight along with the fat they were hoping to rid of. In an infomercial with Tony Little, he showed a graph of what the body loses when someone goes on a diet. By cutting back on foods, the body becomes deprived of very important nutrients. Then when it seems you are losing weight, what you are actually losing is fat AND MUSCLE. Many times, more lean muscle than fat will be lost. And although they may look slimmer because their size is smaller, they are actually weaker and more susceptible to injuries due to losing healthy weight. Healthy weight is muscle and bone weight, the things that support your structure and enable you to perform rigorous activities. A lot of the time healthy weight is misinterpreted, especially in females. Which leads to an amazing fact that 62% of women and 44% of men that are dieting arent even overweight! But they are misled when they step on the bathroom scale and My God look what it says! They are not realizing that muscle outweighs fat over 2:1. Therefor, many people may think they are fat even though they may be healthy. I myself am an example of that. On a height and age chart it says my ideal weight for my height is 155 pounds. I am 168, so does that mean that I am overweight? Not necessarily. Charts and stuff are made for averages and trends because when doing a body fat testing I had only 10.8% body fat which is below the average for people my age and size. So the bathroom scale scares many people into believing that they need to lose weight when it may not be necessary. On top of overweight people dieting we also have healthy people dieting, both of which are extremely dangerous. .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .postImageUrl , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:hover , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:visited , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:active { border:0!important; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:active , .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub092f21aff4a6548f0dc1b34c459582d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Breast Cancer Essay Thus, the fad diet/starvation method should be completely avoided because simple dieting is just a stepping stone that may lead to much more serious things that become life changing or life threatening.. Sample Common App Essay Transition to Adulthood

Sample Common App Essay Transition to AdulthoodSo what's a sample common app essay transition to adulthood? This question is asked more than you'd expect given the relatively broad topic of 'app essays' - documents that explain, point out, or expound on ideas for an iPhone app. People who write these applications might be high school students, college graduates, or veterans of adult life who are looking for a way to reach a bigger audience, gain more credibility, or simply to simply learn a new skill. Whatever your purpose, here are a few tips. While you don't have to make a common app essay the centerpiece of your college application or resume, it's important to start off with an informative first paragraph and pick a good topic. Although most people in this age group will already be familiar with common uses for an iPhone app - and how to create one, according to those who have designed them - a sample essay about one that will launch your career will bring a new audience to the ide a of doing business with the Internet and make it much easier to convince an employer or potential client to accept the prospect. The tone and style of your essay are also critical to your success. Remember that most employers, friends, and family members are likely to see and read a piece that they find thoughtful and professional. A sample essay about a business idea might include plenty of detail and information, but the author will probably try to make the reader feel as though he or she is familiar with the subject matter already. Personal anecdotes will be exaggerated and the product will be presented as being very plausible. In fact, the key to writing a good sample common app essay transition to adulthood is to add only minimal amounts of personal information, using facts and statistics to support your points instead. Take care not to divulge too much of your innermost thoughts and opinions, though, or you'll send your career as an iPhone app developer down the tubes. When craf ting your sample common app essay, keep the most important question in mind: How will the topic be relevant to your future employer? Any experience, technical knowledge, or skills you gained during college can be useful to a potential employer who wants to recruit a budding iPhone app designer, and your job is to convince them to employ you. Your employer may be the reason your college career was so successful; if you're smart, you'll tap into that. Being able to relate your experiences to a broader, more technical-oriented audience, meanwhile, will help you gain credibility and build confidence in your future endeavors.Sample common app essays are just one of the many things you can do to prepare for your future. You can also enroll in courses that help you craft 'bridging documents' that connect your college application and resume to your work history and expertise, and help you navigate the business world in general. This last tip applies not only to writing a sample common app es say, but to writing any kind of non-academic document. To keep yourself informed about the latest trends and news, you can sign up for newsletters, subscribe to online newsletters, and buy a few news magazines. Doing these things will give you a lot of fodder for your everyday life, as well as new ways to use your natural talents to find employment.

Tattered Wings an Example by

Tattered Wings Prostitution has been the oldest business in the world oldest and still not new in our present society today. According to an article concerning violence against women by the United Nations, violence against women is the most prevalent and the least punished crime in the world. And up until today there have been no clear solutions in addressing these crimes against women. Need essay sample on "Tattered Wings" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed By virtue of definition of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), human trafficking is the acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them. From the State of World Population 2003, each year, the range of women and children trafficked into sex slavery ranges between 700, 000 and 4 million. These are ravaging values. It mirrors that for a lot of women and adolescents, their virginity was taken by force horrific but true. People should make a stand for this. This does not only wreck women emotionally, but physically and psychologically as well. A lot of women engaged in the sexual trade are posed to risks to their health and whole well-being. Women are at high risk in getting afflicted with HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. They are also at high risks of unwanted pregnancies. In fact, according to WHO (2004), it is estimated that about 46 million pregnancies are terminated voluntarily each year with 27 million are done legally and 19 million are done outside the legal system. It is really alarming to have women subject to these kinds of treatments. Women deserve better than this. This issue requires more than just an acknowledgement and know-how. This issue requires movement and enforcement among different nations to finally stop women trafficking and sexual abuse. When are we about to act and start our move up until when we finally get to know someone exploited in the sexual trade? When our own friends end up being abused? When our own sisters, mothers and loved ones become sex slaves? Think again. There is no better time and moment to act, but now. Gender Inequality and Reproductive Health Sexual Violence and Trafficking Sexual violence is common in the lives of adolescent girls. This gross violation of their rights also harms their reproductive and sexual health. Only over the past decade has the extent of sexual violence against girls come to be understood and documentation begun. Studies in India, Jamaica, Mali, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe found that between 20 and 30 per cent of adolescent girls had experienced sexual violence. COERCION The first sexual experience for many adolescent girls is forced. In South Africa, 30 per cent of young women indicate that their first sex was coerced. Sexual violence undermines girls development by making it difficult for them to remain in school, destroying their confidence in adults and in peers, and putting them at risk of STIs, unwanted pregnancy and short- and long-term physical or psychological damage. Male adolescents and adult men often tolerate or even condone sexual coercion. Young women, too, may view sexual violence or sex that is obtained through force, fear or intimidation as normal, reflecting perverse gender norms in some communities or societies. One study in South Africa found that sexual violence and coercion against young girls was so widespread it was referred to as everyday love. In another study of 30,000 young people, one man in four claimed to have had sex without a girls consent. Most young man and women expressed the belief that forcing oneself on someone one knows is simply rough sex, and not sexual violence, and the majority of women stated that women were responsible for sexual abuse. The circumstances of sexual violence almost everywhere are similar: girls are most often raped or otherwise abused by people they know, including family members. Sometimes assailants are respected members of their communities: teachers, employers and even religious leaders. Educators increasingly recognize the need to be proactive in countering the violence. The School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa developed an approach to combating sexual and gender-based violence as early as primary school, challenging teachers attitudes and encouraging them to convey anti-violence messages to students. TRAFFICKING IN YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS Estimates of the number of women and children trafficked each year into the sex trade (often through coercion or abduction) and labour enslavement vary widely, ranging between 700,000 and 4 million. The selling of young women into sexual bondage, a serious violation of their rights and threat to their health, has grown considerably over the past decade. Extreme poverty, the low status of women and girls, lax border checks, and the collusion of law enforcement all contribute to the expansion. In Asia and Eastern Europe, girls as young as 13 are trafficked as mail order brides. In India, an estimated two in five sex workers are below age 18. In Sri Lanka, a majority of child sex workers are boys. According to one regional estimation, between 1-2 million men and women are trafficked annually, the majority in Asia. Over 225,000 originate in South East Asia, and an additional 150,000 in South Asia. Many women from the states of the former Soviet Union are taken to Israel, other parts of the Middle East or Western Europe; many are under age 16. The justice system in many countries is more likely to jail or expel the young women than to punish the traffickers. Young sex workers are often kept from the view of authorities. In Cambodia, for example, an assessment of the 100 per cent condom use policy for sex workers found that young female sex workers were often hidden when police came to record their identities. Young sex workers, both female and male, are at high risk of HIV infection. They have little or no negotiating power to insist on condom use and are often targets of coerced or forced sex, which can increase the chances of HIV transmission. HIV prevalence among young sex workers tends to be high from an estimated 25 per cent in Cambodia to 48 per cent in parts of India and 70 per cent in Abidjan, Cte dIvoire. Some countries have begun to challenge the trafficking trade, often in alliance with community leaders. Thailands Government, for example, made assisting youth at risk of entering the sex industry a high priority in the early 1990s. Target areas include eight provinces in northern Thailand with high rates of HIV/AIDS and high percentages of girls who drop out of school. Teachers are trained to identify girls at high risk of being sold, and to work with their families to keep them in school and to earn money locally. Works Cited Ahman, Elisabeth and Iqbal Shah.
